Career analysis

Formula One’s most criticised driver is probably Lance Stroll. We all know he would have been forced to leave the series long ago if it wasn’t for his father’s investments. With that said, there have been worse pay drivers in the history of F1. The problem is that he is arguably the only one still left in 2025.

Stroll has the worst teammate record of all the experienced drivers. He lost substantially to an old Felipe Massa in his rookie season. He barely beat lowly-ranked Sergey Sirotkin in 2018 before being destroyed by Sergio Perez the following two seasons. Very tough start to his career.

Things began to look brighter when he beat an over-the-hill Sebastian Vettel 21-19 in races. Some fans argued that Stroll had improved, but this was debunked when Fernando Alonso came to Aston Martin and had a great 2023 campaign, while Stroll’s performances were, shall we say, much worse than you’d expect. To be fair, he did enter that season injured but at some point the excuses simply lose their validity.

There were signs of Stroll getting closer to Alonso over the course of the 2024 season. The Spaniard still had the upper hand, but Stroll would occasionally beat him.

However, in 2025, Stroll was absolutely destroyed by Alonso in qualifying sessions. He had a few lucky races but it was mostly an anonymous season at the lower end of the midfield.

The Canadian may have a chance of fighting for podiums in 2026 and beyond if Newey creates a top car. But much is dependent on Honda as well.

Stroll rarely outdrives the machinery, and that should always be noted. But if the car is fast enough, he can compete on some tracks. Stroll is also relatively strong in wet weather and changing conditions. He’s had many of his best performances in the rain. When the team gets his strategy right, and other teams bottle it, Stroll sometimes sneaks into the points. Overall, though, he has shown a remarkable lack of improvement after all these years.
