Career analysis
Formula One’s most criticised driver is probably Lance Stroll. We all know he would have left the series long ago if it wasn’t for his father’s investments. With that said, there have been worse pay drivers in the history of F1. The problem is that he is arguably the only one still left in 2025.
Stroll has the worst teammate record of all the experienced drivers. He lost substantially to an old Felipe Massa in his rookie season. He barely beat lowly-ranked Sergey Sirotkin in 2018 before being destroyed by Sergio Perez the following two seasons. Very tough start to his career.
Things began to look brighter when he beat an over-the-hill Sebastian Vettel 21-19 in races. Some fans argued that Stroll had improved, but this was debunked when Fernando Alonso came to Aston Martin and had a great 2023 campaign, while Stroll’s performances were, shall we say, worse than you’d expect. To be fair, he did enter that season injured.
There were signs of Stroll getting closer to Alonso over the course of the 2024 season. The Spaniard still had the upper hand, but Stroll would occasionally beat him.
The Canadian will likely have a quiet season in the back of the midfield in 2025, but Aston Martin is predicted to field an incredible car in 2026 as the rules are changing. If Stroll can continue gaining ground on Alonso, and presuming Alonso stays for the duration of his contract, Stroll may have a chance of fighting for wins in 26. He rarely outdrives the car, but if the car is fast enough, he can compete on some tracks. Stroll is also relatively strong in wet weather and changing conditions. He’s had many of his best performances in the rain.
